Butlins Blueskies Apartment Review

We have just returned from Butlins in Minehead and there is so much to write about that I have decided to split it into three articles (reviews). This one is all about the Blueskies Apartments but you can read my thoughts about other elements of Butlins, Minehead in the following articles...

A review of the food at Butlins, Minehead - coming soon
A review of the resort at Butlins, Minehead - coming soon

Butlins offers a range of accommodation types for those wanting to make their trip more of a holiday rather than a day out (using the day pass). There is something for all budgets and preferences.

To put it in perspective, Butlins quoted me the following prices for May half term and based on four people sharing. Of course everybody holidays with a budget in mind and everyone has different priorities when booking accommodation. .

Standard Apartment - from £49pp
Silver Apartment - from £60pp
Gold Apartment - from £79pp
Deluxe Apartment - from £109pp
Blueskies Apartment - from £155pp

As part of my review, I was offered a Gold Apartment and initially we booked a Gold Apartment. However about two weeks before we were due to leave we had been looking more closely at the Butlins website and decided to pay for the upgrade to the Blueskies Apartments.....and we are so glad that we did! We decided to upgrade for a number of reasons - firstly this is the first holiday we have had with just the boys for quite a while. Secondly we really wanted it to be memorable and thirdly, we LOVE nice hotels which to be honest are a bit of a personal weakness of ours.

As soon as you arrive, we realised that the upgrade was worth every penny. We didn't have to queue to join the hoards of people to enter Butlins resort and then check in. Blueskies has a bespoke entrance and Concierge building. As soon as you entered you felt 'special' and away from the hoards.

The parking is barrier entry and Blueskies guests can park underneath the building for the duration of their stay - ideal if it's raining as you are kept away from the coastal elements of course. Our check in was easy and the staff were obviously well trained - polite and helpful. We had requested an apartment on as high a floor as possible - we were given the second floor. Apparently lots of the apartments higher up are reserved for 'time share' customers.

We quickly found our apartment and I have to say that our initial impressions were very positive indeed. We were astounded at the quality and what we received for our money. We were expecting far less to be honest - it exceeded our expectations beyond a doubt.

The first thing that struck us was the space - a modern yet comfortable environment with everything you needed. We love 'open plan' living (we have been known to knock walls down in our own house to achieve this) and as soon as you walked through the door we knew we were going to be comfortable. The floor to ceiling windows in the lounge area and master bedroom gave this a real 'wow' factor. Thought had been put into making the most of the amazing view...the sea and the beautiful bay.

The bedrooms were spacious and clean. We had a two bedroom apartment (there is also a sofa bed in the lounge area). Our bedroom was spacious and had everything in it you needed - hanging space, space for folded clothes, a dressing table plus bed side tables (one with a safe inside). I was very pleased to see a hairdryer as I had forgotten to pack mine! On the bed we were greeted by two swans crafted from the towels - something I certainly wasn't expecting a Butlins, more akin to a holiday abroad perhaps.

Leading off from the master bedroom was a larger than normal ensuite. Again it was just perfect and I was astounded to see both a bath and a separate shower - you normally have one or the other of course. Included in the ensuite was a small toilet bag of essentials - shampoo, shower gel, body lotion, soap, shower cap and of course the essential mending kit!

We had an amazing view over the bay from our balcony - and had the weather been warmer I am sure that we would have used this area more.

The boys shared a twin room which to their absolute delight contained a small flat screen TV. They are not allowed TVs in their bedrooms at home so this was a real treat (although ironically enough they only watched it for about ten minutes). They both had full size single beds, a dressing table and wardrobe area - perfect for children or adults sharing the second bedroom. Both boys slept well so the beds must have been confortable (or was it the action-packed days and the sea air I wonder?).

There was also a 'family' bathroom, no separate shower in this one but perfectly equipped and very spacious. Both bathrooms were ultra clean and finished to a high standard. Harry, as you can see from the photo is getting quite good at checking that things are up to scratch!

Living area - this was, as I have mentioned very spacious, light and airy. There was plenty of room to eat as a family, sit and chill in the evenings. It was spotlessly clean when we arrived and had all the amenities you would expect.

We loved the fact that we had somewhere spacious to relax - we all had our own space if we needed it yet could come together as a family too. I love open plan living - it works well for our family.

The kitchen was very well equipped with plenty of everything you needed (including very large wine glasses!). The last thing you want to do is come on holiday and have to wash up so a dishwasher is a must in my opinion. There was also a washing machine - we didn't use it but it's nice to have it there just in case we had needed it.

Blueskies at Minehead really does give you the best of both worlds - you are 'at' Butlins but you don't feel like you are 'at' Butlins. Hard to explain, but I will try! Blueskies is situated well away from the hustle and bustle (well a 2 minute walk). Nobody has to 'walk' past and therefore it is perhaps the most tranquil place of the whole resort. I loved the fact that our view was over the sea and bay, rather than the resort (nothing wrong with the resort just the sea gives you a lovely alternative after a day on the funfair etc.

Blueskies at Minehead made our holiday - it gave us a bit of something that is important to us when picking a holiday - modern and comfortable accommodation, something a little special. Had we been staying in any of the other accommodation, I think that we may have been a little disappointed - this ticked so many boxes for us. The view from the window and the balcony was spectacular. I loved the fact that at lunchtime we had a good base to feed the children - and that we could sit down as a family. We then had some 'chill out' time where we could all find our own space to do what we wanted whether it was catching up on some work, watching some TV, checking out Facebook and Twitter (guilty as charged) or relaxing on your bed playing Minecraft.

Blueskies - we will be back!

  1. We worry about this type of holiday not coming up to our expectations, but this looks brilliant, i look forward to hearing more about your holiday

  2. Was so pleased to see this review, we've been looking at getting away & our 13yo saw a Butlins ad. I agree with the comment from Karen we wouldn't have chosen it for same reason. Your accommodation looks fab & am now going to read your holiday review, think i'll seriously consider it. #tried&tested

  3. This looks nicer than I would have thought. I've never really considered Butlins before, but I don't fancy travelling abroad with a baby, so it might be a good option #TriedTested

  4. Ohh wow! It looks fantastic! I love the kitchen x

  5. Now I like that there is a washing machine that would have been so handy when we stayed in Skegness. Does look good, proper beds too!

  6. It looks like Butlins has changed a bit since my visits as a child. The apartment looks fantastic #triedtested

I'd love to hear what you think about this post!! Thank you for taking the time to comment!
